Day 9: Navarrete to Azofra

Today was not a hard day.  We left early and took a few long breaks... whether or not there was an actual town.

Najera was the main stop.  It did not much for me last year, and not much for me this year either. The food was so-so and the people, lackluster when not rude! The highlight being a detour down a quiet street to investigate bell pepper grilling on an open fire. This family does a marathon bottling event once a year and had enough to feed themselves til next year.  They were friendly and chatty. Even invited us to share their food and take pictures.

We are walking through a region called Rioja. It's wine country. Rolling hills and vineyards. It's tempting to eat the grapes... but I'm staying strong!

582 km to Santiago!!!
Today I walked 38,805 steps. Almost 21 miles.  Blister mostly healed... aided by a nice soak in the wading pool/fountain at our albergue.

Side note: The municipal hostel in Azofra is great. Rooms are all double. Courtyard to relax in and it's clean, with proximity to restaurant with great Pilgrim menu. However, it gets a C for the showers and an F for the mattress! I felt every spring indent a circle in my body, listened to squeaking all night and barely slept.  Note to self... take Ambien next time.
