Royal Gorge Railroad

Guess who took a mini getaway last weekend?  We did.

Mark bought me a trip on the Royal Gorge Train for my birthday back in July and Sept 26th was the day we headed south to Canon City to cash in the coupon!

The weather was perfect, the pets were in good hands and the drive was relaxed. Perhaps the first time we had taken the Tesla on a road trip, complete with a charging station plan.

The excursion starts with an a'la carte breakfast. Ours began with coffee and a cinnamon roll too (diet be damned).

Then we headed out of our domed second-story carriage and down to the uncovered carriage, where the cool morning had given way to a hot day... the sun was blazing, the sky was blue and EVERYONE was keeping eyes peeled for the famous big-horned sheep.

Check it out:

It's rugged, unspoiled and packed with natural beauty... not to mention hundreds of years of history.

And the train passes under the famous Royal Gorge suspension bridge, way down here at the bottom of the gorge.

Ok, with just 24 hours down in this area, it became quickly apparent that we needed to come back. There is a lot to see and learn. We met some locals and semi-locals on Saturday night out in town... visited the Holy Cross Abby to partake in the wine festival - featuring tents packed with arts and crafts - and wished we had time to cross that suspension bridge and tour the Prison Museum too. Turns out Colorado has a ton of prisons and some colorful history and oh my, just getting a few poignant questions sorted out on the internet lead us down a rabbit warren - to even more questions than answers!

(Did you know that the infamous super-max prison, ADX, is located in Florence CO? Spitting distance from here, I tell ya. This is a whole 'nother blog post.)
