By 9am I had received one of "those texts" from the airline that announced the Delta flight from LAX, which was leaving at 9pm, was now delayed until 1am. (That's 2am CO time!!!)
Away I went on the bus to DIA and checked myself immediately into the Capital One lounge for lunch, a glass of wine, clean bathroom and good wifi.
A comfy chair at the window was where I journaled, drank and passed the time.
Then, as I exited, I grabbed dinner go also.
One flight down, 2 to go. Oh yeah and the Auckland to Christchurch flight was going to be missed due to the delay, so now I had myself booked on the next flight out - @ 1pm NZ time. Unlikely was going to be able to get to the campervan place in time. More unlikely I was going to be in any fit state to drive, on the wrong side of the road.
Did I mention I fell asleep in LAX and had to be woken by a friendly fellow passenger for boarding at 1am? Yep, that happened. I'm not a night person!
On the ground in Auckland, I made tracks to Domestic and without much issue was quickly onboard the 3rd and final flight to Christchurch.
My bestie from 47 years back was now in Christchurch and had volunteered to host me overnight. Her hubby, Chris, had been sent to fetch me. Hows that for a first meeting?! He's a gem though and I found myself really enjoying his gentle company and intelligent conversation.
When I could have been attempting a sleep-deprived first-time-camper experience, I was instead walking with Kealy, in the warm afternoon sunshine. The first moments of what I hoped would be 2 1/2 weeks of NZ bird photography bliss.
I was freshly showered and looking forward to a home cooked dinner. HEAVENLY! It was easy to be filled with the type of gratitude that overflows when messed up travel plans turn into beautiful opportunities that never would have been, otherwise.
Bonus points. Emotional support kitties!
