The first of the winter weather hikes - shorter but a good first foray - is complete.
Sue and I hiked from Bear Lake (RMNP) past Nymph Lake, then Dream Lake and arrived at Emerald Lake. The temperature was something like 28 when we left the parking lot. We had all the layers... and spikes on our boots. My pack had some snacks and a thermos flask of hot chai.
Across the other side of Emerald Lake, we sat for a bit in the biting wind and indulged. It was beautiful but chilly day to scoff back cheese and crackers, peanut butter M&M's and little tiny cups of sweet and spicy chai. Freezing fingers - a direct result of too much photography - were soon warmed by the hike back down.
I've never been more grateful that I own spikes! Like many (all) the trails in Rocky Mountain National Park, the snow of last week had been stomped down into something that resembled a luge track in places but we both stayed upright!
While self-congratulations were in order for not falling... it was nothing in comparison to the athletic prowess of the two young men who hiked up and skied and snowboarded down this trail, around the 100 other hikers!
